About the artwork
Fire in Stone is a site-specific installation by Medina, commissioned by the State Historical-Architectural Reserve “Icherisheher” and .ART Registry. It inaugurates their Public Art Program, introducing contemporary artworks into the historic environment of Baku’s Old City.
Embedded in the stone pavement beside the Maiden Tower, the luminous composition of erklez glass follows the contours of a buta, one of the most recognizable motifs in Azerbaijani visual culture. Its flame-like form connects the work with the symbolism of fire and traditions of renewal, including the bonfire rituals of Novruz.
Combining glass, colour and light, Medina brings a traditional motif into the everyday life of the city. The work connects its physical materials with the intangible heritage preserved in stories, symbols and rituals.
